Save Auslan Courses Rally
(Pasted directly from this facebook event here [link])
Government cuts to TAFE education funding are causing the Kangan Institute’s Diploma of Auslan, the only of its kind remaining in Victoria after previous blows to other Auslan courses, to shut down at the end of this year. Not only will current students not complete their qualification, but this will be devastating for the future of the Deaf community.
This is your source of interpreters and teachers, Victoria. People aren’t going to stop being deaf.
The government aren’t interested? We’ll make them interested.
————————————————————————————
We are having a silent march on next Wednesday the 30th of May, from 12-1pm, finishing on the steps of Parliament house.
Meet at Federation Square before 12 noon.
Some guidelines:
*Stick to footpaths where possible
*A pedestrian thoroughfare of 2 metres should be kept clear at all times
* Noise levels need to stay below 72 decibels (this one, I think we can do!)
Please wear a white shirt, feel free to make and bring placards but remember we want our hands free to sign!
See you there!
So anyway, as well as cancelling the Diploma of Auslan they are shutting down a number of “expensive and unviable” support services, ie all of them. So no notetakers, interpreters, or any student support.
